Legacy Coffee has become a fixture in the Gresham community. It is a space that has managed to do what feels increasingly impossible: holding a space where everyone—truly everyone—is welcome to belong and to thrive.
When this coffee shop opened, the owners, Brad and Michelle, were single-minded in their mission: to live and work in a way where love would be their legacy. In the midst of many professional and personal challenges, they move through the world with open hearts, offering generosity to others inside of their own limitation. This surrender to love and limitation has forged a generous space for others, where radical self-acceptance is in service to all.
In this contemplative abstract, the central orange figure evokes Wy’East (Mt. Hood) whose presence is a fixture on the horizon. Though we see him daily, it is easy to assume a static presence. Wy’East glows with a quiet, bright energy that is invisible to us all. This active volcano holds secrets still, lending vitality and shape to the surrounding land. His glowing heart nurtures life in subtle ways that give and receive.
In a similar way, Legacy Coffee has become a place of exchange for so many of us. Together, we find and share and create community energized by the generous love that brought it into being. We come to Legacy seeking strength or solace, or we come to Legacy to find ourselves in a conversation with a stranger, sharing a table in a world that would otherwise keep us apart.
Brad and Michelle, staff and patrons of Legacy Coffee: may you also offer your bright and burning heart, honoring your desires and limits. And may the strength of that generous boundary continue to forge a wider space for everyone to belong and be.
